The origins of Iwama Ryu Aikido
Aikido has its roots in ancient Japanese sword, staff and open handed combat techniques. During the first half of the twentieth century a martial artist of rare ability Sensei Morihei Ueshiba synthesised these techniques into Aikido. Morihei Ueshiba built in a vital element which distinguishes Aikido from other martial arts: a non violent code of ethics. If the attacker doesn’t strike Aikido techniques cannot be made.
Aikido is the way of defending physical, mental and emotional attacks from a centered state of harmony within yourself; The martial art for the peace loving.
Aikido is a breakthrough for those unhappy with aggressive, competitive, confrontational martial arts. It has no gender, weight or age divisions. If you have to defend your life such concepts are useless. Aikido trains the mind through the body; after much training your habitual pattern of struggle will be replaced with a resourcefulness which will shows you choices in any situation.
Aikido principles were taught by Morihei Ueshiba O Sensei, the founder of Aikido, to his senior students at his Iwama Dojo (training place). Morihiro Saito Sensei (1928-2002) spent more time on the mat training with the founder than anyone else (23 years). Micheal Field Sensei (1947-2018) commenced his Aikido training as a white belt in Iwama, Japan in 1979 at the founders dojo under the direct instruction of Saito Sensei. He was committed to protecting and preserving the Aikido of the founder as passed on by Saito Sensei. Field Sensei issued Iwama Ryu Aikido Dan Ranks exclusively in Australia from 1994. Field Sensei was made Head Instructor (Soke) of Iwama Ryu Aikido in Australia in 2000 by Saito Sensei.
