Our Lineage

Iwama Ryu Aikido Australia was founded by Michael Field Sensei and is continued by his top instructors. We we are privileged to have a direct lineage to Aikido’s founder O’Sensei Morihei Ueshiba. O’Sensei’s genius has been preserved in his teachings by the important teachers listed below:

Morihei Ueshiba O'Sensei

1883-1969 Founder of Aikido. Born at the very
end of the Samurai era; by 1952 he had created
from its traditional Samurai systems Iwama
Aikido (the world’s strongest Aikido).

Saito Sensei

Morihiro Saito Sensei

31 March 1928 – 13 May 2002
Saito Sensei was taught in Iwama by O-Sensei
Morihei Ueshiba from 1945 until the
Founders death in 1969.

Michael Field Sensei

14 January 1949 – 30 October 2018.
Student of Saito Sensei from 1979-2002.
Achieved black belt while living in Japan at the
Iwama Dojo 1979 – 1982. Made Soke Iwama Ryu
Aikido Australia by Saito Sensei in 2000.

Michael Field Sensei
